Would be 5 stars if not for the cheap rubber handles that fall off within minutes of first use. (Fix overnight with gorilla glue)
Looking forward to using
I like this scoop. It is sturdy enough for me. It doesn't feel very heavy to me. It feels like a reasonable weight.
It looks like wire but it is stainless steel sheet with laser cut holes. If you look closely, there are some wider strips of stainless in the pattern. 3 down the front. I think that helps with strength. There's some in other parts too with those strips. And since the holes are so close together it really sifts fast. I was looking for a fast sifter to get through the trash faster. This fits the bill for me. Sure, some small items fall through, but they tend to be on top and easy to recover. I'm really more interested in ring and pendant sized items and this works well for that. I suppose if I wanted, I could put some mesh in for the small stuff. But, I like it, as is, for it's speed.
The fixture that holds the handle is welded with a continuous weld instead of just spot welding. The weld is super clean, it looks like laser welding to me. The angles make for a solid sturdy holder to basket connection.
There's also a tool that came with it that I used to carefully tighten those odd shaped nuts. I got them really tight and I don't see them coming loose. I didn't use blue locktite, but, I bet if you do, it will keep them on for sure. I'm not worried they will loosen unless I loosen them.
I stuck it into my lawn point first and stood on it. I am 190lbs and It didn't bend or anything. The point helps it go in pretty easy.
I use the long handle and it is a good hight while walking. It feels like a walking stick hight in my hand.
The long handle leverage makes it easy to get the sand up. The lower rubber grip on the long handle has a slight lip on the bottom which really helps hold the scoop when full and pointed down. I recomend pitting 3 strips of 1" tape on the long handle as it's aluminum.
I like the options to place the handle at different angles. I haven't used the small handle, but, it's nice to have it when I have the need for such a handle.
Another nice thing is that I can buy just the scoop if this one needs replacement.
One thing I did to it was to put one layer of 1" gorilla tape on both ends of each male fitting to take up the slack in the connection. After that it was solid. Dot overlap the tape, it fits too tight then. That's it, hope this helps.
Theres actually 3 handle options if you don't put the long handle together. You can use the lower section as a handle because it has a grip.
It is easy to take apart. Just press the dent button to release the top handle. Nice feature for putting it in a bag to keep the sand contained!
I looked at scoops in this price range and I chose this one for the features and value. And High Plains Prospectors had a good price. They shipped fast. I'm totally happy with the scoop and the shipping. Hope this helps.
Works great but It's is a little heavy ...
I recently purchased the Nokta Makro Premium Sand Scoop. It is heavy duty, stainless, and not too heavy. I found the square mesh holes to be a bit too large, however, the larger holes allow for faster sifting. The equally important part of this purchase are the guys at High Plains Prospectors! I've never been disappointed with their service and expertise.
