Product Information

These books are packed with images and stories about the history in this area.  They are perfect for research or just a good read.

With its skyline dominated by the campus of the University of Kansas, the history of Lawrence cannot be divorced from the history of the academy, its influence, and impact. The history of any town, however, is much more than the story of one institution or issue. Lawrence is also a river town, located in an agriculturally rich valley, and Massachusetts Street, its main commercial street, harkens back to its mid-19th century New England origins and influences. Lawrence is also a place of diversity and change, a community where space is contested and disparate opinions make for vital public discourse.

About the Author:

Virgil W. Dean, a native Kansan, has been researching and writing about Kansas and regional history for 30 years. He has edited Kansas History: A Journal of the Central Plains for 25 years and is the author or editor of four books and numerous articles, encyclopedia entries, and book reviews. A resident of Lawrence for more than 30 years, Dean has been actively involved in the preservation community, serving on the city's Historic Resources Commission and the board of the Lawrence Preservation Alliance. The images selected for this volume come mainly from the collections of the Spencer Research Library at the University of Kansas and the Douglas County Historical Society/Watkins Museum of History.
