Choosing a metal detector for a young child can be a difficult decision.  Do you buy one that is extremely basic 

One of the first things to consider is the child's size.  Age is not a good indicator since kids come in all shapes and sizes.  This helps you decide how big of a metal detector you should consider (i.e. length and weight).  A metal detector that is too long will require them to use both hands just to swing it. Too heavy and they won't be able to handle it properly. One too small will not allow them to grow with the metal detector.

Luckily, we have listed all of the metal detectors that we would consider kid friendly.  This means they are easy to use, not too big and most of them allow the kid to grow with the metal detector.
